Nigerian Twitter Trends:
Following the recently announced Twitter ban in Nigeria on Friday 04-06-2021, the federal prosecutors have been ordered by the government to arrest and prosecute users of the Twitter app.
The directive was issued on Saturday by the Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami in a statement signed on his by Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu his spokesman.
Malami directed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) at the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, to swing into action and commence in earnest the process of prosecution of violators of the Federal Government De-activation of operations of Twitter in Nigeria
The Nigerian Communications Commission have also been directed by the Attorney General (NCC), and the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy to collaborate with prosecutors “to ensure the speedy prosecution of offenders without any further delay.
Several high-profile government officials including the Minister of communication, Lai Mohammed had earlier criticized Twitter’s action and accused the social media giant of “double standards.” Mohammed also noted that other groups use Twitter for promoting their beliefs undisturbed.
Nigeria’s ban on Twitter has been swiftly implemented. The implementation was noticed as Twitter’s site was inaccessible for many Nigerians from the early hours of Saturday.
Although the platform was inaccessible, some Nigerians were able to find their ways around the ban through the use of a virtual private network that allows users to access public networks with encrypted internet connections.
