Journalists to Protest Colleague’s Disappearance in Abuja

Journalists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are set to protest to the Nigeria Police Force’s headquarters in Abuja over the continuous disappearance of a reporter with Vanguard newspapers, Tordue Salem.

Salem, who is attached to the House of Representatives, was said to have gone to a garden near the police headquarters in Garki area of the FCT on October 13 around 8pm and has been missing since then.

According to the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, FCT chapter, Emmanuel Ogbeche, the journalist’s disappearance in front of the police headquarters is ridiculous.

He said: “Journalists should hold security operatives in the FCT responsible, especially the police. We have resolved to stage a peaceful protest tomorrow (today).

“The FCT police command has been interrogating some people but we feel that is not enough. We want the matter to be transferred to the force headquarters and a special unit there should handle it.

“It is ridiculous that he went missing in front of the force headquarters and he has not been found or whether it was a case of abduction or not.

“We remain persuaded that this is not a case of kidnapping. Security agencies have a lot of answers to provide in this regard.

“We don’t want to insinuate that he is with them, but if they have been unable to find him and we have referenced a case of where a journalist went missing for two years before pressure was mounted which led the DSS to admit he was with them.

“We do not hope this isn’t the case but if it is it, we demand he should be brought out and charged to court if there are allegations against him.
