ICPC detains D’banj for the N-Power fraud, and his attorney complains
On Wednesday, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission announced that Mr. Oladipo Oyebanjo, aka D’Banj, had been arrested on suspicion of fraud related to the N-Power program.
Azuka Ogugua, the anti-graft agency’s spokesperson, stated in a statement that an inquiry was still being conducted into the situation.
She said that on June 8, 2016, the administration of President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret.) launched the N-Power program in an effort to combat young unemployment and promote social development.

“Many N-Power beneficiaries had complained about not receiving the monthly cash despite the government paying for them,” the statement read.
Ogugua noted that the ICPC has invited and granted administrative bail to roughly 10 individuals over the past three months in relation to the fraud.
She claimed Oyebanjo turned down numerous requests to meet with an inquiry team.
On Tuesday, December 6, 2022, Mr. Oyebanjo surrendered and was brought into custody at the ICPC headquarters. He is now assisting investigators in piecing together the facts surrounding the fraud charges made by the petitioners.
Ogugua continued, “The inquiry will be thorough and extended to additional fraud partners and the banks where the beneficiaries’ accounts are domiciled.”
In a statement, the musician’s attorney, Maryam Musa, called the news of his detention “misconceived, spiteful, and harmful to the court system.”
“D’banj has no such contractual or incidental relationship whatsoever with any organization or persons within or outside of government in relation to the distribution, operation, access, or control of the operation of any government fund through an agency or its subsidiaries,” the statement said in part.
“D’banj has urged the commission to conduct its investigation thoroughly in order to guarantee that those individuals attempting to implicate him in such absurd activities are brought to justice.
The general public is urged to resist the temptation to fall prey to media hype, which is predictable but nonetheless detrimental to the route of truth that D’banj has voluntarily chosen by obeying the ICPC’s summons.
We continue to hold out hope that D’banj will not soon be absolved of all and any accusations made against him due to the ICPC’s thorough investigation.
