Three gunmen who assaulted the state’s Independent National Electoral Commission headquarters were slain by the Imo State Police Command on Monday morning. The gunfight, which lasted an hour and kept Owerri’s people up all night, also claimed the lives of one police officer and injured another.Five guns, two cars, charms, locally manufactured bombs, phones, and money were recovered from the assassinated gunmen, according to the state police spokesperson, Michael Abattam, who talked to our correspondent at the command headquarters in Owerri where the dead bodies of the thugs were shown.A police officer’s death and another operative’s wounded were also confirmed by him.
“They attacked the INEC headquarters in Owerri about 3am,” Abattam claimed. Unfortunately for them, our troops who were manning the gate repelled their attempts to throw bombs onto the top of the INEC building. They arrived with four cars and heavy weapons.
“We bolstered as they engaged our soldiers on the ground. They fled, leaving one of their trucks behind, after realizing we were more powerful. Toward the Onitsha Road, we gave chase vigorously. Thankfully, we defeated three of them.
“Others managed to flee with gunshot wounds. Sadly, one of our men paid the ultimate sacrifice. One more suffered harm. Two automobiles were found. Additionally, we found five weapons, jewelry, explosives produced in the area, phones, cash, and other artifacts.
