At least 42 and counting have been reportedly killed in the north, Syria after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that originated in Turkey and was felt across neighboring countries. The quake struck Azaz in the rebel-held north of the Aleppo province, early on February 6, 2023.

Turkey is situated on major fault lines and is frequently jolted by earthquakes. The quake on Monday was rated 7.8 by the US Geological Survey. At least 20 aftershocks occurred several hours later during daylight, with the strongest measuring 6.6. Rescue workers are searching for trapped survivors while excavators dig through rubble to find people trapped beneath the rubble. At least 284 people were killed and over 2,000 injured in ten Turkish provinces. The death toll in government-held areas of Syria has risen to 239, with 600 injured. Many Beirut residents fled their homes and took to the streets or drove away from buildings.
